On May 23rd, Chinese Laser Press released the Top 10 Advances in Optics in China 2021. After multiple rounds of selection by the review committee, 10  projects were selected into the basic research category, 10 into the applied research category, and 19 achievements were nominated. In the 10 basic research categories of Top 10 Advances in Optics in China 2021, two research projects of Nankai University, namely Nonlinear Tuning of PT-Symmetry and Non-Hermitian Topological States and Nonlinear Huang Equations and Achievement of Giant Nonlinear Phenomena of THz Waves, were selected, showing the important achievements made by Nankai University in basic optical research.

“Nonlinear Tuning of PT-Symmetry and Non-Hermitian Topological States” is a research project, led by Prof. Zhigang Chen and Prof. Jingjun Xu from the School of Physics, Nankai University. The research group is the first that built photonics platform with nonlinear, non-Hermitian and topological characteristics in the world.

“Nonlinear Huang Equations and Achievement of Giant Nonlinear Phenomena of THz Waves” is a research project of Professor Qiang Wu and Professor Jingjun Xu 's team from the School of Physics, Nankai University. Amid the process of research, the team extended the Huang Equations from linear to nonlinear field for the first time, constructed the nonlinear Huang Equations for the description of the excited phonon polaritons, and found that the delocalized phonon polaritons can greatly enhance the nonlinear effect of the THz wave.
